HOW DID “THE BEAUTIFUL GAME” BEGAN
Everybody knows that football is the most followed sport in the world, but what most people don’t know is how did it all began…
I can start by telling you that football started in 255-206B.C. and tell you all about how ancient Chinese dynasties played a football-like sport. I can also tell you that Native Americans also had a similar sport, but I’m not here to give you an ancient history lesson, so I’ll go directly to the point.
It all began in 16th century England, when public school students played using two net-less goals and hands could be used. Later, rules and regulations such as not using hands started to appear, and by 1700, dedicated football clubs already started emerging. Although the rules are different from today, they started shaping modern day football. It was not until the early 1800s that the Football Association appeared. The FA was in charge of collecting and merging all the football codes and rules, to make one big set of rules that everybody could use. However, it was not until 1863 (the first official meeting occured) that the association would agree on the standard set of rules.
Soon after on February 1, 1968, the first official match began; the match was between Sheffield Wednesday and Nottingham Forest F.C. It was played in Battersea Park, London. From that point on, “soccer” started spreading all over Europe. People were making new associated clubs, and countries were trying to form their own national teams and leagues. Thanks to this growing popularity of football on an international level, in 1904, FIFA was created and it created a new and better set of rules. In 1930, the very first World Cup took place in Uruguay (it was won by Argentina), it’s the only World Cup that didn’t have qualification round, but instead every single team that was affiliated to the FIFA, was invited.
And that is how, the beautiful game FOOTBALL came to be…
