This month, after the long an tiring task of making and counting surveys we decided who is the best athlete of Colegio Menor from grades 8 to 12. We choose randomly 50 people from each grade and made them vote for the best athlete; and this month’s BEST ATHLETE, having a breaking record of 142 votes, is Raphaela Garces!!
Raphaela is an outsanding 8th grade student with a loving heart and a super friendly personality. She was born on April 2 of 2000. At age 12 she became the national champion of vaulting, she has won over 40 contests.
–How old are you and since what age have you practiced this sport?
I’m 13 and I’ve been practicing since I was 5 years old.
–Why did you start practicing?
When I was 4 I had the opportunity to go see a vaulting contest in Rancho San Fransisco. As soon as the contest started, my mind was blown away by the complexity of the sport, the agility of the “ vaulteadores”, and the nobleness of the horse; At that moment I knew I wanted to practice it.
–What has been your greatest achievement?
My greatest achievement was winning the 2011-2012 national championship.
–In every sport there are risks. What are some risks when riding?
I guess there’s only one, but it can lead to many injuries; obviously its falling of the horse and hurting your back, ankles, wrists, head. It depends mainly on the severity of the fall.
–What is your greatest fear when you are practicing this sport?
With no doubt my greatest fear is that the horse will get scared and go crazy and out of my control.
–What are your goals for the next 5 years?
One of my life long dreams is to compete in the world championship, but my goals for the future are to compete and win internationally.
-What can you say to those who are starting this sport?
Always believe in yourself never say “I can’t” or “I’m to afraid” always give your best and be constant.
–We asked one of your teammates what is your biggest strength. What do you think she said?
That I get scared really easily?
“She is extremely elastic, gets scared from anything, but shes tough. She never gives up and when she fails she get back up again”-Domenica Granja.
Well I guess we can all see why she was picked as the athlete of the month, not only is she a good athlete but she is a extremely good person so best of luck to Raphaela, and to all the readers.
